What Stage of Formula Should You Be Using?
If you’ve browsed the My Organic Formula website, you’ve probably noticed how some formulas come in different stages. It can be a little confusing determining what stage of formula is best for your little one, but hopefully the information provided below will answer any questions you may have about the different stages of formula.
What makes each stage different?
Although each brand of formula varies, generally speaking, the stage of formula denotes the age at which it should be used. For example: HIPP stage 1 formula is best suited for children between the ages of 0 to 6 months.
Each stage of formula is specifically developed to meet the needs of a growing baby’s changing dietary needs. A newborn baby who sleeps the majority of the day doesn’t need as many carbohydrates (our body’s main source of energy) as a crawling and active 9-month-old baby.
The earlier stages of formula – PRE and 1 – typically contain less carbohydrates, iron, and protein. As your child’s need for more carbohydrates, iron, and protein increases, so do the content of these ingredients. Stages 2 and up contain more fats and sources of energy to meet your growing baby’s needs.
When should I start using a different stage?
We usually recommend making the switch to a different stage within a week of your child turning the age listed on the box. For example: if you’re feeding your baby a stage 1 formula and your baby is going to be turning 6 months in two weeks, you’ll want to make the switch to a stage 2 formula either a week before or after they turn 6 months.
It’s important to note: the difference in formula ingredients varies the most between stage 1 and 2. So, the older your child gets, the less you have to be concerned about making a stage switch right away. It’s fine to make the switch to a stage 3 or 4 within a couple of weeks of your child turning the recommended age.
Is PRE a stage?
Yes, PRE is a stage of formula designed for babies from birth to 6 months. PRE is not short for preterm birth or Preemie. It’s a stage of formula specifically designed for the sensitive tummy in mind. PRE stages of formula do not contain starch, which can sometimes be difficult to digest. Please note: not all of the formulas we carry come in a PRE stage.
